Is LVP flooring good for basements?

Is LVP flooring good for basements?

For most basements, yes. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is made of vinyl rather than wood, so a little dampness won't swell or warp it the way it can with hardwood or laminate, and it won't hold moisture the way carpet does.

Check the basement first

LVP handles moisture well, but it doesn't fix a wet basement. If water comes through the walls or floor after heavy rain, deal with that first. The concrete should be dry and reasonably flat before the floor goes down.

A simple moisture test: tape a square of plastic sheet to the bare concrete, seal the edges, and leave it for a day or two. Droplets under the plastic mean moisture is coming up through the slab. Darkened concrete on top of the plastic points to humid air instead, which a dehumidifier helps with.

What goes under it

Many LVP planks come with a pad attached. Some floors call for a separate underlayment or a vapor barrier over concrete. The manufacturer's instructions decide which, and following them matters for the warranty on the planks. High spots in the concrete get ground down and low spots get filled, because LVP shows bumps and dips underneath it.

LVP compared with carpet and laminate

Carpet is warm, but it holds moisture and smells once a basement gets damp. Laminate looks similar to LVP, but most laminate has a wood fiber core that swells when it gets wet. LVP keeps the wood look and is far more forgiving of a damp floor, which is why it has become a common basement choice.

Why people pick it

It looks like wood, it is easy to wipe clean, and it is comfortable to walk on. That makes it a common swap for worn carpet in basements, kitchens and bathrooms, where spills and wet boots are part of life. In winter that includes slush, salt and muddy paws.

Choosing a plank

Thicker planks and a thicker wear layer on top hold up better to heavy traffic, pets and furniture. Lighter colors brighten a basement with small windows. Order a few extra planks beyond the room size for cuts and future repairs, and keep a box after the job.

Looking after it

Sweep or vacuum grit, which scratches the surface over time, and wipe spills with a damp mop. Put felt pads under furniture legs and a mat at the bottom of the stairs. Skip steam mops and wax unless the manufacturer says they are fine.

Finish the room

A new floor looks best with new trim and baseboards. Our crew can install those once the LVP is down, so the room looks finished, not patched. See recent floors in our project photos.

What we don't do

We install LVP flooring. We don't refinish hardwood floors.

Questions

Can you install baseboards with the new floor?

Yes. We can install new trim and baseboards once the floor is down.

How do I get a price for LVP?

It depends on the room size and what is under the old floor. We come out and give you a free, no-obligation estimate.

Can LVP go straight over concrete?

Often, yes, once the concrete is dry and flat. Some floors need an underlayment or vapor barrier first. The plank maker's instructions decide.
